LONDON: Jacob Rothschild, the philanthropist and financier of the well-known Rothschild banking dynasty, passed away on Monday at the age of 87, according to his family.

In 1963, Rothschild started working in the family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons, before leaving to launch his own companies and nonprofits. His family released a statement honoring him.


“Our father Jacob was an imposing figure in many people’s lives, an exceptionally skilled financier, an advocate for the arts and culture, a committed public servant, an enthusiastic supporter of Jewish and Israeli organizations, an astute environmentalist, and a cherished friend, father, and grandfather,” according to his family.

Without giving any further information, they continued, “He will be buried following Jewish custom in a small family ceremony and there will be a memorial at a later date to celebrate his life.”

The Rothschild family is thought to be worth approximately 825 million pounds ($1 billion), based on the Sunday Times Rich List from the previous year. Millions of pounds are supposedly donated to Jewish charities, art, and education by it.

Leaders in politics and culture who honored Rothschild included former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Blair hailed him for his efforts to further Middle East peace and called him a “towering figure in Britain’s Jewish community.”

Rothschild, who was up in Berkshire, a region west of London, attended Eton College and Christ Church College, Oxford University, to study history.

He became the head of Rothschild Investment Trust, which is currently RIT Capital Partners when he left the Rothschild Bank.
